Speech Therapy Works, LLC was founded in 2018 by speech language pathologist, Kim Schifano. The inspiration for starting a speech therapy company was conceived from Kim's own struggles with trying to find quality outpatient speech therapy referral clinics for her adult patients once they were discharged from rehabilitation. Kim is acutely aware of the limited availability for outpatient adult-focused speech therapy providers in this area. And as the baby boomers are entering the golden years, the concept of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is becoming an epidemic. Kim saw a need for therapeutic intervention with seniors that were beginning to see some changes in their thinking or memory skills, and were worried about eventually developing dementia. Kim works closely with patients, family, and their neurologist to formulate a full lifestyle plan in order to help keep the brain young and sharp.
Kim became interested in orofacial myofunctional therapy when she began seeing children at her practice for articulation disorders that had been in speech therapy for many years. She questioned why they were not able to get this sound despite thorough instruction, modeling, and cueing. Kim knew there must be something deeper underlying many of these articulation disorders. Kim went on a continuing education frenzi, and became certified in orofacial myofunctional therapy in 2018. By incorporating this approach of oral muscular repatterning into speech therapy sessions, and making the appropriate referrals to qualified dental, orthodontic, and ENT specialists to address underlying structural issues, we have seen amazing results with many children mastering the production of their target sounds in 6-12 months.
